Our vocal cords, also known as vocal folds, are embedded within a system of vocal production organs that inhabit our throats.

Vocal folds are made up of a number of intrinsic muscles. There are five different muscles considered to be laryngeal intrinsic. When these muscles work together they adduct the vocal cords. The only exception is the posterior cricoarytenoid which is in charge of abducting the vocal cords.
